The quality of the passenger experience and the identification of a
precise identity
are the main issues we have dealt with in redefining the spaces of Naples airport.
Our interventions have often been punctual and necessary to mend certain areas of both the terminal and the external areas subject to a ‘decay’ of image and architectural quality over time.
The challenge was to identify a common thread for all interventions, a style that could best represent a brand identity for the airport.
The interior design of many elements of the airport is intended to express that
sense of suspension
that generates flight.
A sense of suspension and at the same time of dynamism, which is expressed for example through the sloping overhang of the gate and check-in counters, as well as some of the walls, or the continuous play of transparencies and reflections through the use of glass.
The materials used are all chosen for their great durability, excellent resistance to wear and tear, and pleasant look and feel.
Together, all these interventions contributed to the prestigious
ACI Europe Best Airport 2017 award
in the category up to 10 million passengers. The redevelopment of the external area, on the other hand, saw a total reconversion of the spaces: the pedestrianisation of about 3,000 square metres was planned, with the relative
shifting of vehicle flows
to other locations.
Therefore, a square with three covered spaces was created: a distribution and catering area, a parking area and baggage claim. Leaving the terminal, a tensile structure with impermeable PVC sheets covers a triangular area of about 140 square metres, partly occupied by tables for catering and partly by pedestrian paths. The portal structure is made of galvanised steel and painted white.
The paving of the square is in grey concrete slabs with white inserts and frames. The latter emphasise the radial design identified by the pedestrian paths, acting as horizontal signs. The furnishing system envisages the use of greenery through the use of large triangular planters resting on the existing slab.
The
main lighting
is on poles approximately 3.5 m high and are equipped with reflected light fixtures. Added to this system is the lighting of the covered walkways and the three tensile structures by means of directional LED spotlights. Finally, an accent lighting system enhances the green flower boxes and olive trees.
