In disuse for about 20 years, except for some spaces on the ground floor, the building located at Largo S. Aniello Caponapoli housed the General Pathology laboratories of the University Polyclinic and was in a state of general dilapidation, as well as functional and plant engineering inadequacy.
For the design of the hospital’s new spaces, aspects related to
flexibility, maintainability and convertibility
were taken into account, which were ensured by technical solutions that allowed as much organizational and functional adaptability of the facility as possible. Regarding the functional architectural aspect, the design focused on the new distribution of internal spaces and functions.
Great attention was paid to the design of the façade given the highly prized historical context. An avowedly contemporary elevation, but respectful of the geometries and materials that insist on this block. Simplicity of sign and geometries characterized by horizontal scanning and careful use of ribbon windows and stringcourses.
All in compliance with the stringent energy regulations for this type of intervention thanks to the use of a micro-ventilated facade system and the replacement of the existing iron window frames with high-performance thermal break frames.
